When will the judge announce the sentence in Donald Trump’s ‘Hush Money’ trial? Date and time
The judge will announce Donald Trump’s sentence in the ‘Hush Money’ trial in mid-July. Can the decsion by the jury be appealed?
The trial surrounding campaign finance violations stemming from a hush money payment made to adult film Stephine Clifford, known professionally as Stormy Daniels, by the Trump campaign in 2016 has come to an end. Donald Trump has become the first former president to be found guilty in a criminal case, and more trials are in his future. Though a historic moment for the country, it is unlikely to have many electoral consequences for Donald Trump’s 2024 bid for the White House, with much of the electorate already having formed their opinion on him.
After the jury’s decision had been announced, Trump’s legal team approached Judge Juan Merchan to discuss when the sentencing hearing would take place, says reporter Tyler McBrien, who was in the courtroom. “Blanche asks for a sentencing date in mid to late July [because] of Trump’s charges in other jurisdictions,” wrote McBrien. The final date set was 11 July at 10 AM ET.
Can Donald Trump appeal the ruling?
While the news that he was found guilty on all 34 Class E Felony counts could mean jail time is in Donald Trump’s future, there is still time for the former president to appeal the ruling. An appeals process could take years, meaning that Donald Trump could be in the White House when the court system makes such a decision.
Statements from Republican leaders, like Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, have shown support for an appeal to be filed. Speaker Johnson posted on X that upon exerting his right to “appeal this absurd verdict, [... Donald Trump] WILL WIN!” The GOP narrative on the case echoed in Speaker Johnson’s statement, has been that the trial represented a weaponization of the country’s judiciary.
“This was a purely political exercise, not a legal one. The weaponization of our justice system has been a hallmark of the Biden Administration, and the decision today is further evidence that Democrats will stop at nothing to silence dissent and crush their political opponents,” remarked the Speaker.
