Which breed was the winner at the 2024 National Dog Show?
The event, aired live on NBC, followed the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with a surprising best in show.
The 2024 National Dog Show, a beloved Thanksgiving tradition, featured an impressive lineup of canine competitors vying for the prestigious Best in Show title. This year, approximately 2,000 dogs representing 205 breeds gathered at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center.
The winner of the 92nd edition of the event was a Pug named Vito. The little fellow secured the title after first winning the Toy Group, which included 24 breeds, and then outshining six other group winners to claim the prestigious Best in Show honor. It is the first time in more than two decades that a pug has won the award.
“I’m so proud of him,” Carolyn Koch of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, said in an interview with NBC News.
The Reserve Best in Show was awarded to Verde, a Welsh Terrier.
History of the National Dog Show
The National Dog Show has its roots dating back to 1879, when it was originally known as the Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Show. This event marked a significant moment in American dog show history, following earlier exhibitions that began in England. After a hiatus during World War I and a subsequent resumption in 1933, it has been held annually ever since.
In 2002, the show gained national prominence when NBC began broadcasting it on Thanksgiving Day, immediately following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
