Which country has won the Oscar for best international film the most times?

To prepare for the Oscars we took a look back at the international film category and the countries that have made a name for themselves in cinema culture

This year ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ (Germany), ‘Argentina, 1985″ (Argentina) ‘Close’ (Belgium), ‘EO’ (Poland), and ‘The Quiet Girl’ (Ireland) are nominated for Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Japanese film, ‘Drive My Car’ took home the award at last year’s award ceremony.

First Place | Italy

Italy leads the world in the number of films that have been awarded the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. The country known for its architecture, food, and beautiful climate has produced fourteen Oscar-winning films, including classics like ‘Life Is Beautiful,’ ‘Mediterraneo,’ and ‘Cinema Paradiso.’

Italian films have also received the second-highest number of nominations, following only France. The most recent films nominated for an Oscar were ‘The Hand of God’ in 2021 and ‘The Beast in the Heart’ in 2005.

Second Place | France

France, with twelve wins, sits in second place for most Academy Awards for their feature films. The 1992 Academy Awards marked the last time a French film, ‘Indochine,’ secured the award, and since a total of ten films have been nominated. The most recent nomination came in 2019 for ‘Les Misérables.’

Third Place | Japan

Five of seventeen Japanese films nominated for an Academy Award have taken home the Best International Feature Film prize. The most recent win came in 2021 for ‘Drive My Car,’ directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and adapted from a short story collection by Haruki Murakami.

The five films are:

  • Rashomon’ (1951)
  • Gate of Hell’ (1954)
  • Samurai, The Legend of Musashi’ (1955)
  • Departures’ (2008)
  • Drive My Car’ (2021).
