The Oscars are predictably dominated by English-language cinema; they are in America afterall. However, every year there are a few international films that fight their way into a position to challenge the big boys and sometimes win. Think back to 2019 with Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” as it won four awards.

In terms of the category of International Feature here are the nominations for 2023:

  • “All Quiet on the Western Front”, Germany
  • “Argentina, 1985″, Argentina
  • “Close”, Belgium
  • “EO”, Poland
  • “The Quiet Girl”, Ireland

As well as being a favourite to win the International Feature, “All Quiet on the Western Front” is also nominated another eight times. It was released on streaming at the end of October 2022 making it easy to watch which cannot often be said for too many international films in the US.

While it wasn’t India’s chosen film for the International Feature, S. S. Rajamouli’s “RRR” has been nominated for the Original Song category. It won the Golden Globe for the same category so is a major candidate to pick up the Oscar in March. It would be India’s sixth Oscar win, four of the previous five have been for the songs too.

Up with nine nominations is “The Banshees of Inisherin”, directed by British-Irish director Martin McDonagh including Best Picture and Director. While not strictly an international film according to Oscars rules as it is acted in English, it is not an American production so is worth a mention.
