Former President Donald Trump is the leading candidate to clinch the Republican presidential nomination, but there are many in his party who are opposing his candidacy.

Among those who believe that Trump should not run in November 2024 are current and former government officials, including former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney.

There are many other officials from the executive branch, senators and representatives, as well as statewide executive officials who are not in favor of Trump’s candidacy.

Which Republican governors are against Trump running in 2024?

There are 26 Republicans currently serving as governors, and eight of them are opposed to Trump’s candidacy. Here are the state leaders who are against the former president’s bid for reelection in 2024.

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum

Burgum is not only opposing Trump’s candidacy, he is going head-to-head against him. The former software CEO announced in June that was running for president, and is selling himself to the electorate as someone who will promote small town values in the national arena.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

Once thought to be Trump’s biggest rival in the race to clinch the Republican nomination, DeSantis’ star is no longer shining as brightly and comes in at a far second. During his tenure as governor, he has backed legislation to remove funding from diversity and inclusion programs, and banned gender identity education in public schools.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu

Sununu has attacked Trump, saying that his 2024 candidacy is nowhere near that of his 2016 bid. The New Hampshire governor says the former president no longer has the energy for the campaign, and that he brings “a lot of drama to the table,” per ABC.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox

Cox has not formally endorsed any candidate, but he has said he doesn’t think Trump can win the presidency. He says Trump’s mounting legal woes will lead to him to losing the national election if he becomes the Republican nominee.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb

Holcomb endorsed former Vice President Mike Pence for president back in June, although Pence has since backed out of the presidential race.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp

There has been tension between Trump and Kemp, which boiled over when the governor refused to overturn Joe Biden’s win in his state. Kemp earlier this year said no swing voters will cast their ballot for the Republican nominee “if they choose to talk about the 2020 election being stolen,” in apparent reference to Trump. However, he has also said that if the former president does win the GOP nomination, he will support him.

Which Republican governors endorse Ron DeSantis?

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has endorsed Ron DeSantis in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, saying he is better poised for victory than Trump, whom she said cannot win if he is unable to attract voters beyond his base.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has also gave his formal support to the Florida governor in his Oval Office bid. He says that DeSantis’ performance in Florida is but a taste of what he could deliver in the White House.
