American households are being battered by rising prices hitting their highest mark yet this year at 9.1 percent in June. Democrats in Congress have put forth legislation to provide some relief but the likelihood of it passing is slim at best.

However, fourteen states have already passed their own measures using budget surpluses to send residents direct payments through tax rebates. Another five states are contemplating taking such steps as well. Here’s look at what relief checks have been approved.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the California state budget that included a $17 billion relief package. Among the measures is $9.5 billion portion that will send Golden Staters “inflation relief checks” for up to $1,050 for eligible California residents. The payments are expected to begin going out in October via direct deposit and debit cards.

Colorado

Coloradans will be getting $400, for couples that file jointly $800, from the state mandated TABOR refund. The money was supposed to go out in the spring of 2023 but the Governor Jared Polis, with the backing of legislative leaders signed a bill in May to move the payments up to as soon as August.

The state also moved the filing date back one month so that taxpayers could meet the requirement of being a full-time resident who filed a 2021 tax return.

Delaware

Taxpayers who filed a 2020 Delaware state tax return can look forward to seeing a $300relief rebate”. For those that didn’t file a return or if you have further questions about the measure, the Delaware Department of Finance has provided a Frequently Asked Questions page.

Florida

Through the Department of Children and Families’ Hope Florida—A Pathway to Prosperity program, some Florida households with children will receive a one-time payment of $450 per child. No action is needed by parents but if you have questions you can contact the Customer Call Center at 850-300-4323.

Georgia

Georgia households that filed both their 2020 and 2021 tax returns could get between $250 and $500 in the form of a one-time tax rebate depending on filing status. The Peach State’s historic state budget surplus made the payments possible. The Georgia Department of Revenue provides a Frequently Asked Questions page.

Hawaii

Governor David Ige signed a pair of bills in June. One will see the state’s minimum wage jump to $12 per hour in October and then gradually rise to $18 by 2028. Another bill will have the state Department of Taxation begin sending out direct payments in late August of $300 to state residents who earn less than $100,000 per year and $100 to those who earn over that threshold.

Idaho

Those who were full-year residents in Idaho during 2020 and 2021 and filed a grocery tax credit or income tax return for both years are eligible for Idaho’s $350 million in tax rebates. Each taxpayer will receive either $75 or 12 percent of your 2020 Idaho state taxes, whichever is greater. You can check the status of your rebate through the states tax commission’s access point (TAP).

Illinois

Illinois residents who reported making less than $200,000 per year or $400,000 per couple filing jointly will receive $50 and $100, respectively. And for each eligible dependent will get an additional $100 but limited at claiming three per family.

Indiana

Governor Eric Holcomb announced in June that on top of the $125 Hoosiers are currently receiving from the state’s automatic taxpayer refund, he wants to use $1 billion for the state’s budget surplus to send an additional $225. In total that would mean $350 per individual or $700 for a couple if it were approved during a special session. Hearings are set to begin on Tuesday 26 July.

Payments on the $125 one-time tax refund for individuals and $250 for couples began in May and will run through mid-summer. Those that don’t receive their payment by 1 September can consult the Department of Revenue Automatic Taxpayer Refund page.

Maine

Over 850,000 Mainers who filed a 2021 tax return will receive direct relief payments of $850 to help cover the increased cost of things. Eligible residents who did not file a state tax return for 2021 can file through 31 October to claim their payment.

Minnesota

Eligible frontline workers in Minnesota had until 22 July to submit a claim for a one-time payment of $750. Governor Tim Walz has proposed using part of the state’s $7 billion budget surplus to provide Minnesotans with a tax rebate of $1,000 per person but the measure needs to get through the legislature.

New Jersey

The New Jersey Division of Taxation began sending Garden Staters rebate checks of up to $500 at the beginning of July. Roughly one million families that filed with a Social Security number will receive the one-time payments by mid-August. A proposal to earmark an additional $53 million to send similar payments to New Jersey taxpayers that filed with an ITIN has yet to be approved.

New Mexico

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a law to send multiple tax rebates to state residents in March.

Taxpayers with incomes of less than $75,000 per year will receive $250, those numbers double for couples. The payments will be sent automatically in July to taxpayers who filed a 2021 state return.

All taxpayers, including those who receive the before mentioned direct payment, will be sent two equal payments in July and August for a total of $500 for individuals and $1,000 for joint filers. Again the payments are automatically sent to those who filed a state return for 2021.

Residents who don’t file a tax return won’t be left out. Single individuals without dependents will receive $500, while couples and single adults with at least one dependent will get $1,000. The one-time payment will go out in July.

Oregon

Oregon households that received the state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on their 2020 tax return and lived in Oregon for the last six months of 2020 were eligible for a $600 direct payment per tax filing. Over 236,000 low-income households received a payment.

Those who are eligible were sent the financial support between 23 June and 1 July. Those who are concerned about their payment can check with the Oregon Department of Revenue website.

South Carolina

South Carolinians will be looking forward to receiving up to $800 in the form of a tax rebate from the state after Governor Henry McMaster signed the budget at the end of June. Officials are still finalizing the details of how much each resident will get and when the payments will be sent.

Virginia

Starting mid-October, the Virginia Department of Taxation will begin sending state residents who filed a state tax return prior to 1 July a tax rebate of $250 per individual. In order to receive the one-time payment, Virginians must file by 1 November 2022. The tax authorities advise those residents who have moved to update their mailing address by 15 August.
