When is the last day to file your taxes in 2026: This year’s tax deadline is quickly approaching
Haven’t started preparing your 2025 tax return? You had best get working on it if you want to avoid being penalized as the deadline is approaching fast.

The 2026 tax season kicked off on 26 January when the Internal Revenue Service began accepting and processing Americans 2025 tax returns. The U.S. tax agency will be expecting taxpayers to file by the April 15 deadline and pay and outstanding money owed.
So, if you haven’t yet begun to prepare your paperwork, you had best get working on it if you want to avoid being penalized. If you don’t think that you will have enough time, you can always file for an extension until 15 October, but you will still need to settle any debts that you have with Uncle Sam.
Know that if you are in an area where that was affected by a declared disaster you may already have an extended deadline.
In the event that you paid more to the IRS than you had to, you can expect to get a refund. So the sooner you file, the sooner you will see that money in your bank account.
For those that need help filing, the IRS has Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TAC) where you can get in-person help. Simple find the nearest office to you, check which services are available, and then call 844-545-5640 to schedule an appointment.
Additionally, there are IRS-certified volunteers that can help prepare your tax return for free, if you meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Earn $69,000 or less
- Have a disability
- Need language support
- Are 60 years or older
You can also contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 or 800-829-4059 for help and assistance in filing tax returns.
