A storm system has brought the first snowfall of the season to the east coast of the country. Beginning on 4 January, in the High Plains, the storm moved from the southern Appalachians toward the northeast of the country, freezing rain and snow are expected to last at least through Sunday, 7 January, bringing snow of 5 to 12 inches in mountainous areas.

States affected by the snow storm this weekend

Among the first affected states were New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. The storm is currently moving eastwards with the heaviest snowfall developing in New England. This would include:

  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia

Meteorologists are forecasting a snowfall ranging between four to six inches in the city of Boston. 12 inches could fall on Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey.

“It’s still a few days away, so we’ll have to hash out the storm track — where the precipitation falls, and how long the cold air can stay,” said Tony Fracasso, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

In addition to this, another low pressure system unleashed heavy snowfall with torrential winds in Alaska, which will continue throughout the weekend.
