Who are Kamala Harris’s stepchildren? The story behind their names
Kamala Harris has two stepchildren, Cole and Ella Emhoff, children of her husband Douglas Emhoff. Discover the interesting origin behind the family names.
Kamala Harris could make history if she wins the presidential election on Nov. 5. If so, the Democrat would become the first female President of the United States, while her husband, Douglas Emhoff, would obtain the title of First Gentleman of the United States.
Kamala Harris and Douglas Emhoff have been together for more than a decade. The couple met in 2013, through a blind date set up by the vice president’s best friend. At the time, Harris was working as California’s attorney general, while Douglas, who was divorced with two children, was practicing law as an entertainment attorney.
According to reports, that first date was a huge success, so the couple quickly began a relationship. Kamala Harris and Douglas Emhoff tied the knot in August 2014, through an intimate ceremony in Santa Barbara, California.
Since then, the duo has maintained a stable relationship, with both parties supporting each other unconditionally in their respective careers, while Kamala has also taken on the role of stepmother to Douglas' children: Cole and Ella Emhoff.
The origin of Kamala Harris’ stepchildren’s names: why they are called Cole and Ella Emhoff
Kamala Harris' stepchildren, Cole and Ella Emhoff, are the product of her husband Douglas Emhoff’s former relationship with his ex-wife Kerstin Emhoff. The names of both figures have a rather interesting origin, as they were inspired by important music stars, specifically jazz.
Cole Emhoff, now 30 years old, was named after famed jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time. Throughout his career, Coltrane made numerous contributions to the genre, creating a legendary impact on modern jazz. Cole’s name pays homage to this musical legend.
For her part, 25-year-old Ella Emhoff’s name is inspired by Ella Fitzgerald, one of the most famous jazz singers in history, also known as “the First Lady of Song.” Both names reflect the Emhoff family’s admiration for music, especially jazz.
“Momala” Harris
Although both are children from Douglas’s first marriage, the truth is that both Cole and Ella have a great relationship with the vice president.
According to various interviews, since Harris and Emhoff got married, the Second Gentleman’s children have chosen to call Kamala “Momala” as a sign of affection, since it is a nickname that mixes the word “mom” with her name.
Likewise, both have expressed their gratitude and affection for the Vice President of the United States, highlighting her constant support and unconditional love.
