With the 2023 Golden Globes upon us, there is a keen interest in knowing what has happened in past editions. One of the most prestigious shiny statuettes to be handed out on the night is that of Best Director and so we decided to take a stroll back through time and check out the winners of over the years.

Who’s won most Best Director awards at Golden Globes?

Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, Miloš Forman, David Lean and Clint Eastwood have all won three Best Director for Motion Picture gongs at the Golden Globes but there is another behind-the-spotlight star who has the record number of four. That honour goes to Elia Kazan, winning all four times nominated, and the movies behind the awards were:

  • Gentleman’s Agreement (1948)
  • On The Waterfront (1954)
  • Baby Doll (1956)
  • America America (1963)

It is worth noting that the Golden Globe Awards have been presented annually since 1943 and are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to recognise excellence in film and television. Let’s check out all the directors that have lifted a statuette for their skills.
