How much do you really know about the Golden Globes? Here at AS USA we’ve done our best to inform you of most of the related topics of interest surrounding the annual event, but one question that has been asked is which person had won the most statuettes, whether director or actor. Let’s get that cleared up right now...

Who’s won most Best Director awards at Golden Globes?

Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, Miloš Forman, David Lean and Clint Eastwood have all won three Best Director for Motion Picture gongs at the Golden Globes but there is another behind-the-spotlight star who has the record number of four. That honour goes to Elia Kazan, winning all four times nominated, and the movies behind the awards were:

  • 1948: Gentleman’s Agreement
  • 1954: On The Waterfront
  • 1956: Baby Doll
  • 1963: America America

It is worth noting that the Golden Globe Awards have been presented annually since 1943 and are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to recognise excellence in film and television.

Who has the most Golden Globe acting awards?

When it comes to acting, it’s Hollywood legend Meryl Streep that is the Golden Globes’ most decorated actor. The now 73-year old has picked up eight awards in acting categories during a career that has spanned nearly half a century. Maybe unsurprisingly, Streep also holds the record for the most nominations, having been a contender for a statuette 32 times.

In addition to her eight Golden Globes in acting categories, Streep was in 2017 presented with the Cecil B. DeMille award - a lifetime achievement accolade handed out by the HFPA for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”.

What were Meryl Streep’s Golden Globe wins?

  • 1980: Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture, Kramer vs Kramer
  • 1982: Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama, The French Lieutenant’s Woman
  • 1983: Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama, Sophie’s Choice
  • 2003: Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture, Adaptation
  • 2004: Best Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture, Angels in America
  • 2007: Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, The Devil Wears Prada
  • 2010: Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Julie & Julia
  • 2012: Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama, The Iron Lady

So, as you can see, when it comes to filling up a home cabinet full of Golden Globes, it’s Streep that leads the way.
