Update:

On Monday at 7:00 p.m. ET, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker began a marathon speech on the Senate floor and he’s still going strong at the time of this writing. In his speech, the Democratic senator is criticizing President Donald Trump and his administration as well as Elon Musk.

Booker posted on X to announce his plans for the marathon speech:

“I’m heading to the Senate floor because Donald Trump and Elon Musk have shown a complete disregard for the rule of law, the Constitution, and the needs of the American people,” Booker said. “I am not going to stop speaking, I am not going to stop standing. I am going to go for as long as I’m physically able to go.”

On the Senate floor, Booker said that he’s there because he believes “sincerely that our country is in crisis”.

Booker’s speech is not considered a filibuster, as he’s not attempting to delay a legislation or nomination from passing. Although voting is finished, Booker is allowed to hold the floor for as long as his remarks last.

Who is Cory Booker?

In 2013, Cory Booker became the first Black U.S. Senator to represent New Jersey, and he’s held the position ever since.

Booker grew up in New Jersey and received his undergraduate and master’s degree from Stanford University. There, he played varsity football, was a volunteer at the campus peer counseling senator, and wrote for the student newspaper. He later studied at the University of Oxford under the Rhodes Scholarship. He went on to study at Yale Law School, graduating in 1997.

He then moved to Newark and started a nonprofit organization providing legal services to low-income families. He served as the mayor of Newark from 2006 to 2013. During that time, he helped to improve the economy, reduce crime, expand affordable housing, and increase educational opportunities.

Booker won a special election to represent New Jersey in the United States Senate in 2013 and was re-elected to a full six-year term in 2014. As a member of Congress, Booker is working to improve access to affordable healthcare, reform the criminal justice system, and solve environmental injustice and food insecurity.
