Gene Sperling, one of President Joe Biden’s senior economic advisers, is leaving the White House to work for Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign.
One of President Joe Biden’s senior economic advisers Gene Sperling has announced he is stepping down from his position to work for the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris.
The president confirmed the move in a statement, saying Sperling has helped him “execute a rescue plan that has led to one of the most equitable and resilient economic recoveries ever.”

Who is Gene Sperling, Biden’s top adviser who is leaving the White House to work for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign?
Sperling advised Biden’s presidential campaign and served under former Democratic Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton as director of the White House National Economic Council and national economic advisor.
He oversaw the Biden administration’s implementation of the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus plan, or the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
“His work helped nearly 40 million working families get unprecedented child tax cut relief and over 8 million renters get emergency assistance to help keep their families housed,” according to President Biden’s statement.

“Under Gene’s leadership, the American Rescue Plan has delivered economic relief to cities and counties across the country, protected millions of union pensions, made the largest-ever federal investment in public safety, and kept thousands of small businesses afloat.”
Conservative critics have said handing out aid during the pandemic has caused skyrocketing inflation.

Gene Sperling’s work history with Harris
Sperling has worked with Harris in the past, when he was working for the Obama administration and she was attorney general in California. He also served as an external adviser when she was a senator, according to the Associated Press.
The lawyer was the founding executive director of the Brookings Institution’s Center for Universal Education, for which he co-authored the book, “What Works in Girls’ Education”. He writes for several publications including The Atlantic.
Sperling was also a consultant for NBC’s “West Wing”, where he co-wrote four episodes. He met his wife, television writer Allison Abner, while working for the series. They share two children, Nina and Miles.
