Every month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends payments to retired workers and survivors, as well as beneficiaries of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Payments are sent on specific dates based on a schedule established by the SSA, and for March, two payments will be sent on Friday the 1st.

When are Social Security payments sent?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are sent on the first day of each month. On the third day, money is remitted to beneficiaries who started to receive their payments before May 1997.

The rest of the Social Security checks (for retirees, survivors and SSDI) are sent on Wednesdays, based on the date of birth of the beneficiaries.

  • Second Wednesday of each month: retirees with a date of birth between the 1st and 10th
  • Third Wednesday of the month: beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th
  • Fourth Wednesday of the month: retirees born between the 21st and the 31st

For those who collect Social Security benefits (retirees or survivors) and SSI at the same time, the SSI payment is sent on the first day of the month and the Social Security payment is mailed on the third day.

If any payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, shipping is advanced to the previous business day. Because of this, two payments are sent out on March 1.

Social Security: How much money is sent each month?

The amounts are calculated individually based on several factors, so checks vary from one beneficiary to another.

In 2024, average payments for retired workers rose to just over $1,900, according to the SSA. Meanwhile, SSI benefits have risen to $943 for individuals and $1,415 for couples.

Payments are sent via direct deposit to beneficiaries who have given their bank account details to the SSA or via mail in a paper check, which takes longer to arrive.

These Social Security beneficiaries receive their payment on March 1

Per the usual schedule, the SSA will distribute Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments on March 1.

On the other hand, because the third day of the month is a Sunday, payment for beneficiaries who began receiving their benefits before May 1997 is brought forward and sent also on Friday, March 1.

For those collecting Social Security (retiree or survivors) and SSI benefits at the same time, both payments will be given out on March 1.

The rest of the payments are sent on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays of March:

  • Wednesday, March 13: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 1st and the 10th
  • Wednesday, March 20: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 11th and the 20th
  • Wednesday, March 27: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 21st and 31st
