The Social Security Administration (SSA) issues millions of payments to beneficiaries of the agency’s programs each month. Recipients are mostly retired workers. However, some people may be eligible for disability benefits. Typically, these individuals fall under the category of Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

SSI benefits are intended for low-income adults and children who have a disability or blindness. People 65 years of age or older may also be eligible for the payment, even if they exceed the minimum income limit imposed by the SSA.

Social Security Amounts

With the 3.2% COLA adjustment announced in October last year, the average payment for a retired worker increased from $1,848 to $1,907 per month in 2024, and from $2,939 to $3,033 for couples filing jointly. As for SSI beneficiaries, checks increased from $914 to $943 for individuals and from $1,371 to $1,415 for couples filing jointly.

Retired workers receive insurance payments on Wednesdays, based on their date of birth. Those born from the 1st to the 10th receive the check on the second Wednesday of the month. Those with birth dates from the 11th to the 20th on the third Wednesday, and those from the 20th to the 31st, the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Employees who retired before May 1997, like SSI beneficiaries, do not fall into the previous scheme because they receive the money on the first days of the month, regardless of their date of birth.
