SOCIAL SECURITY

Who receives $1,800 from Social Security on December 27?

The year is about to end and the Social Security Administration is sending out the last payments for 2023. Who will receive up to $1,800 on December 27?

United StatesUpdate:
How much money do you get if you retire at age 61?

The Social Security Administration is sending out the final payments of the year as 2023 draws to a close. The agency gives out benefits to more than 71 million recipients each month, majority of whom are retired workers. Other beneficiaries include widows/widowers and people with disabilities.

Some of them fall under the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, which provides monthly payments to people who have limited income and few resources. SSI is for people who are 65 or older, as well as for those of any age, including children, who are blind or have disabilities.

Others receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, which are given to people who are unable to work for a year or more because of a disability.

Average Social Security payments in 2023

The average payment for retirees in 2023 has been $1,827. However, the exact amount received by each beneficiary depends on several factors, such as the number of years worked, the salary received, taxes paid, and the worker’s age at the time retirement was requested.

The average payment for SSI beneficiaries this year is $914 for individuals, and up to $1,371 for couples who file their taxes jointly.

Social Security calendar explained: How payments are distributed

The date on which retired workers receive their monthly payment depends on their day of birth, while SSI benefits are distributed on the first of each month.

Retirees who were born between the 1st and 10th receive the money on the second Wednesday of the month, while those who were born between the 10th and the 11th get their check on the third Wednesday. Those whose birth dates fall from the 11th to the 31st can expect their benefits on the last Wednesday of the month.

This payment schedule only applies to those who requested their retirement after May 1997. Workers who retired before this date receive the payment on the third day of the month, regardless of their day of birth.

Who will receive $1,800 from Social Security on December 27?

Considering the payment schedule, as well as the average amount of a check for a retired worker, the people who will receive an average payment of $1,800 on Dec. 27 are those who retired after 1997, and whose date of birth falls between the 21st and the 31st of the month.

There are only two scheduled Social Security payments left for the rest of the year:

  • December 27: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 21st and 31st
  • December 29: The January 2024 payment is advanced for SSI beneficiaries

The first check of 2024 for SSI beneficiaries is paid ahead on Dec. 29, 2023. This is because the usual payment day, Jan. 1, falls on a holiday (New Year).

This payment also represents the first check with an increase due to the 3.2% Cost of Living Adjustment announced in October, which means that individual SSI beneficiaries will receive an average payment of $943. Couples who file jointly will see their checks rise from $1,371 to $1,414.90.
