Why has Chris Rock turned down hosting the 2023 Oscars?
Rock spoke about the Academy proposal at one of his stand-up shows last year in Phoenix, Arizona. The comedian revealed that he was asked to host this year’s Oscars, but turned down the offer, joking that returning “would be like going back to the scene of a crime.”
Referring to the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, Rock told the crowd at the Arizona Financial Theater that going back to the movie awards ceremony would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson to “go back to the restaurant” where she left her glasses before she was killed.
Rock has been the presenter of the Oscars three times, in 2005, 2016 and 2022.
Who is going to host the Oscars 2023?
The Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel at Ovation Hollywood, the renamed Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, on 13 March, 2023 at 8 p.m. ET. It will be Kimmel’s third time hosting the awards.
“Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honour or a trap,” Kimmel said in November last year. “Either way, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no.”
