This simple household trick has become one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to clean a toilet.
Why experts recommend putting salt in your toilet: the surprising reason behind
Cleaning the bathroom is one of the most demanding household chores. Thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting this space often requires a wide range of chemical products designed to remove grime and unpleasant odors.
Even so, there are many situations where conventional cleaners are not enough, leading people to rely on home remedies such as white vinegar for disinfecting and adding shine, or baking soda as a natural deodorizer.
The salt-in-the-toilet method
One household habit that has recently gained popularity involves eliminating unpleasant odors coming from the toilet. When air fresheners fail to do the job, adding salt to the toilet bowl can provide an effective solution.
This technique not only helps clean and disinfect the toilet but can also act as a natural deodorizer. It helps remove dirt and mineral buildup that flushing alone cannot eliminate, all while using a common kitchen ingredient that reduces the need for harsh chemical cleaners.
To use this method, mix 2 tablespoons of coarse salt with 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Sprinkle the mixture over the inside surfaces of the toilet bowl. Then, using a toilet brush or cleaning cloth, scrub the mixture into the surface so it can work as both a mild abrasive and a disinfecting agent.
For added freshness, you can mix in a few drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lemon, lavender, or eucalyptus. For best results, apply the treatment at night when the bathroom is used less frequently, allowing the mixture to remain in contact with the bowl longer. Keep the lid closed so the fresh scent is noticeable the next day.
A powerful cleaning method
In addition to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties, salt helps soften residue when it comes into contact with water. It may also help prevent stains, reduce mineral deposits, and make it easier to remove organic matter that could contribute to clogged pipes.
While these practical benefits make the method appealing, ritual arts expert Víctor Brossah has shared another reason for using salt in the toilet.
According to Brossah, “Throwing salt into the toilet is a powerful way to remove negative energy and the evil eye from your home.”
The ritual is simple. Brossah recommends repeating the following phrase out loud:
“May all envy, judgment, inherited fear, and emotional misery that prevent me from moving forward dissolve into this salt.”
Afterward, throw the salt forcefully into the toilet bowl, flush, and visualize everything being washed away. According to Brossah, this small ritual serves as a form of “subconscious reprogramming,” using a seasoning that has long been associated with purification in cultures around the world.
