The mysterious underground city that is 2,500 years old and has more than 1,000 tunnels

At first glance, Orvieto looks like one of the many charming medieval towns scattered across the heart of Italy. For centuries, Orvieto’s underground maze remained largely forgotten. That changed in the 1980s, when a landslide near the Cathedral of Orvieto exposed an unexpected cavity beneath the surface. What initially appeared to be a simple sinkhole led to a major archaeological discovery: more than 1,200 man-made chambers carved into multiple levels beneath the city.

The discovery prompted local archaeologists and cave explorers to begin a systematic investigation of the underground complex. Since then, a portion of the site has been opened to the public through guided tours known as Orvieto Underground. Visitors can explore dimly lit passageways, ancient wells, and tool rooms that appear almost untouched by time.

The underground city attracts not only curious travelers but also researchers from around the world interested in Etruscan excavation techniques and their advanced understanding of hydraulic engineering. In many ways, the galleries reveal a remarkable mastery of the natural landscape and a sophisticated approach to urban planning and resource management.
