Why is John Legend performing a Prince tribute to intoduce Tim Walz at the 2024 DNC?
The popular singer has been chosen as the lead-out act for the Vice-Presidential nomination.
John Legend, the 12-time Grammy-winning artist, is set to perform a Prince tribute at the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) to introduce Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Prince, a legendary musician and cultural icon, hailed from Minnesota, the same state Governor Walz represents. Legend won’t be performing alone. He’ll be joined by Sheila E., a frequent collaborator of Prince and the opening act on his Purple Rain tour.
Who has performed at the DNC so far?
Jason Isbell and Mickey Guyton performed on Monday with Patti LaBelle and Common on Tuesday. DJ Cassidy also had a song for each state on Tuesday’s roll call. Lil Jon made an appearance.
The Harris campaign’s decision to limit celebrity appearances stems from a desire to connect more authentically with voters. Senior spokeswoman Adrienne Elrod emphasized the importance of leveraging celebrity influence without overwhelming the political message with a “Hollywood liberal elite” image.
“We are living in the most personalized media environment ever, so it’s crucial we are leveraging the unparalleled excitement around this historic ticket by doing everything we can to break through to the voters who will decide this election,” the Harris campaign’s senior spokeswoman Adrienne Elrod told TMZ.
