Democrats formally nominated Vice President Kamala Harris as their standard-bearer in the 2024 presidential election at the Democratic national Convention in Chicago. Illinois. Likewise, her vice presidential pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, was voted in by delegates as the other name on the Democratic ticket.

The pair have hyper-energized the Democrats and upended the race for the White House, which originally had been a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Given the growing number of public gaffes from the incumbent, it had seemed that his challenge was weaker than his arm wrestle. The change to Harris immediately flipped the narrative to Trump being the old man in the race, and focus could rightly turn to the almost daily word salads, mind lapses or misspeaks that he was sharing with the masses.

Walz and Harris of an age

Democrats immediately highlighted all they felt were the right reasons for the pick, things like signing into law a guaranteed free breakfast and lunch for all Minnesota students. Republicans pointed to some rioting in the city he represents. But another question that seemed to cross the political divide was his age.

Given that for months, or should I say years, the prospect of Trump and Biden leading their respective parties ensured that age was a key topic of discussion, it’s maybe no surprise. So how does Walz compare on that measure to the other three involved in the race for the White House?

Harris was born on October 20, 1964, and the 59-year-old’s VP choice, Walz is 60, born on April 6, 1964, making him just six months older.

Going into the Vice Presidential debate with Walz is JD Vance, the youngest of the four, having recently turned 40 on August 2. Donald Trump, of course, is very much the more senior, already 78 years old.
