Will there be a debate between Biden and Trump? What have the candidates said?
Are we going to have a Biden - Trump debate? Here’s the latest on whether the two are going to clash for the cameras.
As the US Presidential Election draws closer and closer, the question has arisen of whether the two candidates - Joe Biden and Donald Trump - are going to go head-to-head. Unfortunately, it won’t be with huge foam gladiator sticks, but a TV debate.
As the suggestion has spread, both sides have made their thoughts clear of going up against one another in front of the microphone. Here’s the latest.
What did Biden and Trump say about a debate?
When asked if he was happy about a possible TV debate being held between the two, Biden replied “I am – somewhere. I don’t know when, I’m happy to debate him”. Short and sweet.
Trump fired straight back at Biden’s reserved comment. On Truth Social, a social media platform owned by Trump Media & Technology Group, he said “Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, an old expression used by Fighters.” Maybe Trump thinks he is going to use foam gladiator sticks.
The calls for a debate come primarily from Republicans, who have raised their voices for the event to happen.
They have sent out press releases and campaign memos saying that Trump wants to debate, and, as put by CNN, “Biden owes it to the American people to stand on stage with him as soon as possible”.
As well as a debate between the two candidates, calls have also come from Kellyanne Conway, a Trump campaign manager in 2016, who made a point of saying that Vice President Kamala Harris should absolutely debate whoever Trump picks as his running mate as soon as an announcement is made.
A dozen of the nation’s biggest news organisations grouped together in early April, penning an open letter urging President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump to participate in televised debates ahead of the 2024 election. It was signed by a number of broadcast, cable and print outlets, including ABC News, The Associated Press, CBS News, CNN, C-SPAN, Fox News, NBC News, NewsNation, Univision, NPR, PBS NewsHour and USA Today.
So, given the comments from both candidates, it seems like we’re closer than ever to having a Presidential Debate in 2024.
