Astronomy enthusiasts have an exciting year ahead as there are many space events scheduled for 2024, including eclipses and meteor showers. The first event for this year is the full moon in January, which is also known as the Wolf Moon. The lunar cycle started on January 4, with the moon in its last quarter phase. On January 18, the moon entered its crescent phase, and tomorrow it will appear full.

What time will the Wolf Moon be visible?

The first full moon of 2024 will be visible on Thursday, January 25, starting just before 7:00 pm. The last full moon of winter will appear on February 24, almost a month away.

How to see the full Wolf Moon 2024

To fully enjoy the brightness of the full moon this January 25th, it is recommended to find a dark area without any objects or impediments that may obstruct your view. Visiting a park, finding a field, or leaving urban areas where there is less light pollution will increase your viewing experience. Around the country, temperatures remain low, so be sure to bring warm beverages, jackets, gloves, and blankets.

Why is it called Wolf Moon?

Legend has it that the wolves howl more during the first moon of the year. However, this explanation is unlikely since animals do not follow the Gregorian calendar. In reality, the louder howls are likely the result of the wolves making more noise as they search for food, which is more scarce in the winter months.
