How does Trump’s victory in New Hampshire affect the 2024 election race?

Well, he has done it again. Former President Donald Trump, who has been the projected winner of the GOP primary race for months, has secured his second victory of the election season in New Hampshire. The former president secured over half of all votes (45 percent), earning him twelve delegates. Former South Carolina governor and former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, earned nine delegates. After Florida Governor Ron DeSantis dropped out of the race, Haley is the only remaining challenger. Trump’s second win is unlikely to alter the dynamics of the election in any significant way.

Will Nikki Haley stay in the race?

Nikki Haley has the choice to stick it out and try to make something of a second-place victory, but it is unlikely to help her in the near future. Her best hope at this point is to increase her name recognition so that she can run again in 2024. The former governor has made clear that she has no plans to drop out, telling a crowd that she would like to see the other forty-eight states vote before deciding on her campaign’s future.

This week, Donald Trump ruled out the possibility of selecting Haley as his running mate... but many political commentators see her moderate credentials as a way to balance out the ticket. The moderate nature of the voters was made clear in a poll conducted in New Hampshire that showed that under thirty percent of voters supported a national abortion ban. Democrats are already starting to use abortion rights as a wedge issue to raise fears that if Republicans are elected, they will create further restrictions to accessing abortion at the national level.

Where are the next primaries taking place?

The Democrats are set to host their first official primary in South Carolina on 3 February. Then, on 6 February, the party will host the Nevada primary, with Republicans hosting their primary two days later on 8 February. President Biden is expected to win the nomination without any hiccups, and with Trump in a similar position, the 2024 General Election is likely to be a 2020 rematch.
