HOLIDAYS
Work calendar 2024 in the USA: all holidays for next year
From New Year’s Day to Christmas Day... Here is the calendar of federal holidays when people do not work in the USA in 2024.
In the United States, there are eleven official holidays that are celebrated between New Year’s Day to Christmas Day. Before 2020, only ten holidays were recognized, but in 2021, the United States Congress declared Juneteenth Day as the eleventh public holiday.
During official holidays, federal government entities are required to close, but many other state and private institutions offer these days as vacation days for their workers as well. Here is a list of holidays for the upcoming year that will help you plan your days off in 2023.
The calendar of federal holidays in 2024
There are 11 official federal holidays recognized by the US government. Some of these holidays are celebrated on fixed dates each year, while others change dates annually. If a holiday falls on a weekend, it can be observed on the preceding or following weekday. Specifically, if a holiday falls on a Saturday, it will be observed on the previous Friday, whereas if it falls on a Sunday, it will be observed on the following Monday for pay and leave purposes. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has provided the dates for the official federal holidays in 2024 as follows:
In the Washington, DC metropolitan area, workers have an extra holiday known as Inauguration Day. This day is celebrated every four years on January 20th following the presidential election. However, Inauguration Day will not be observed in 2024, as the next presidential inauguration is scheduled for January 20th, 2025.
What establishments close during federal holidays?
It is mandatory for federal government entities to close during holidays. Such entities include the offices of the Social Security Administration (SSA). However, other institutions such as state and private organizations also usually close on all holidays or only on specific dates. These include businesses, schools, post offices, libraries, and banks. In the case of supermarkets, pharmacies, or restaurants, they usually only close on holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas Day.
