World’s most expensive cheese sold at auction in Spain
Guinness World Records have confirmed that the cheese was sold to the owner of restaurant El Llagar de Colloto after a bidding war.

A restaurant in Spain spent an absolute fortune at auction to take home a Cabrales blue cheese that was named ‘Mejor Queso del Certamen’, or ‘Best Cheese of the Competition’ at a prestigious competition.
The wining bid was made by restaurant El Llagar de Colloto, whose owner, Iván Suárez, paid €36,000 ($41,860) for the 2.3-kilogram piece of blue cheese. That is the most ever paid for a piece of cheese and it has been honored as such by Guinness World Records.
The record-breaking cheese was made by Ángel Díaz and was aged for more than 10 months in the Los Mazos cave, located one kilometer above sea level.
Cheese can only be called ‘Cabrales’ if it’s made in the Cabrales region of the Picos de Europa, a Spanish mountain range that forms part of the Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. It requires specific conditions and meticulous care to achieve perfect natural fermentation, producing a strong flavor and blue veins.
This is not the first time that El Llagar Colloto has spent big on cheese. They are a recurring buyer of world-class Cabrales cheeses and they regularly bid on some of the top performers at the Cabrales Cheese Competition in Arenas de Cabrales. During the event in Asturias, buyers from all over the world spend big on some of the best cheeses that money can buy.
