The Witcher Season 3 could be a long time coming

Having Henry Cavill return as Geralt of Rivia is something fans of the books, the video games and the actor have been waiting for since the end credits of The Witcher began to roll. Now, we know that the script for Season 3 is nearing completion, although this doesn't mean that production is about to begin.

Through an interview with TechRadar, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, showrunner of The Witcher, revealed that although the script is “almost done” it will take time for the next season to begin filming.

“Actually, this is our last week [December 3] in the writers’ room," she revealed. “We’re almost done with the scripting phase, and it’s amazing. I’m really thrilled with how the season is shaping up because it’s based on my favorite book in the saga, which is The Time of Contempt.”

While the preview of what's to come is welcome, for Hissrich, production on Season 3 is still a long way off. For now, there is no official date when principal photography will begin, with Hissrich mentioning that the "creative process is now really just starting."

"I feel like seasons 1 and 2 have been laying the playing field for everything huge that’s about to happen," she added. "But the creative process is now really just starting. We have the scripts, and now we’ll bring directors on, the actors back in, and really start delving in deeper and reflecting back and making sure that it’s the perfect season."

What is known of the next season?

For those interested in knowing what happens next, we can mention that The Time of Contempt is the second book written by author Andrzej Sapkowski. It focuses on the tensions between Nifgaard and the Northern Kingdoms as they both prepare for war.

The Witcher Season 2 premiered on Netflix on December 17, ending the two-year wait fans had to endure to continue the adventures of the Butcher of Blaviken. For now, there is no confirmed release date for Season 3, and from what Hissrich mentioned, we will again have to wait again for its continuation. Maybe, just maybe, we will have time to play The Witcher 3 again.
