The Coalition shares an impressive technical demo of Unreal Engine 5

The Coalition continues to show the public the potential of Unreal Engine 5 in their hands. The makers of the Gears of War franchise share The Cavern, a technical demo of the graphics engine that uses "movie-quality" assets with "tens of millions of polygons" rendered in real-time.

The video shows the Xbox Series X's ability to move these tests in real time. Kate Rayner, the studio's technical director, shared her feelings on leading the project and how it may impact the studio's development of future projects.

The Coalition in the raw: future of Gears of War and the benefits of Unreal Engine 5

In a post on the official Xbox blog, the division asked Rayner about how Unreal Engine 5 will impact the future of Gears. “We gained access to UE5 very early on and quickly saw the benefits to moving development for our future titles to utilize the new tools,” revealed the director. According to her, it will allow them to “enable higher-quality visuals” and “larger and more interactive environments,” among others.

While stressing that they are not yet ready to talk about their next game, Rayner says that Lumen and Nanite, previous technical demos of the engine, opened "new doors" for them. “You can see the impact of Nanite already in our cinematic tech test, which enables full-quality movie assets to be rendered in real time.”

The director talked about the advantages it will bring to the work of the technical teams: “Our artists can create assets with tens of millions of polygons, scalable to scenes with billions and billions. The details are just incredible, more than 100 times what was possible before. Just looking at the eyeball detail the number of vertices and polygons are the equivalent of what an entire character would have been in the previous generation of games”.
