The sequel to Blizzard's acclaimed shooter has announced its release date and confirmed that it will be free to play at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase.

Update:
Overwatch 2 will be free to play, will be released in October and has a new hero: Junker Queen

Overwatch 2 was one of the many, many games present at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, where they took the opportunity to make two very important announcements. The first, that the game will be free to play. Anyone will be able to play it completely free once it is launched. And that is precisely the other big news of the day. The game will be released on October 4, 2022 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

In addition, the game has shown another gameplay trailer full of news that has served to confirm and see in action one of the new heroes (heroines) of Overwatch 2: Junker Queen.

Overwatch 2: this time there will be a campaign mode

The great novelty of the sequel will be a campaign mode that Jeff Kaplan, former vice president of Blizzard Entertainment, speaks of as "a complete experience" that will seek to compete with shooters like Titanfall 2 in that sense. This campaign mode will be written by Michael Chu, who has worked on more than fifteen short films about Overwatch and taken the baton in many of the videos about the origins of each character.

The author has the difficult task of bringing together all the lore created around the saga and has already revealed that he will approach this mission as a river novel, or in other words, with a narrative that will put us in the shoes of different characters and perspectives. He also talked about the length of the Overwatch 2 campaign, which will be "what you would expect from any other AAA game. For the first time Overwatch will leverage its story and narrative through gameplay and vice versa."

In addition to this campaign, there will be a new PvE (Player versus Environment) mode that the first part did not have and that we will be able to enjoy with several friends: "We are working on a cooperative function, some Hero Missions that will make everything much more replayable and that will be enhanced with its own progression system. It will allow each hero to level up only in this mode and get new powers for it".
