Tomb Raider sequel with Alicia Vikander is off the table: MGM has lost the rights

The sequel to the Tomb Raider movie with Alicia Vikander had the green light, MGM planned to continue the story of Lara Croft and the director and screenwriter Misha Green (Lovecraft Country) had been hired to materialize the project. However, with the coronavirus crisis in the middle, everything was delayed. And now, The Wrap publishes exclusively that MGM has lost the film rights to the franchise.

According to multiple industry sources familiar with the subject, several Hollywood studios are trying to get the rights to be able to develop the project, but according to The Wrap, Alicia Vikander is no longer attached to it. They mention a reboot that at the moment has no cast or directors attached. The rights went back to the studio, which struck a deal with GK Films to re-up the IP. Now, they are waiting to see who takes the helm.

Alicia Vikander: "it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands"

Asked about the Tomb Raider sequel in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress stated that "With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue" she had no idea if the movie was going to be made or not. "I think Misha and I have been ready, so it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands, to be honest."

The Tomb Raider saga is going through some major changes. Square Enix, until now owner of Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, has sold the studios and their intellectual properties to Embracer Group, the conglomerate of companies that includes companies like THQ Nordic or Koch Media. From now on, the franchise changes hands, although the next video game starring Lara Croft has not yet been shown. The details shared are sparse, although they point out that it will be a mix between the classics and the new ones.

Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider make up the reboot trilogy, as well as other spin-offs.
