Apple presents its two most advanced and powerful smartphones to date. And it redesigns the notch with its brand new Dynamic Island.

Update:
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max: price, specs, colors, release date and Dynamic Island

In pairs, this is how Apple has presented its new iPhone range, which again consists of 4 models - just like the previous iPhone 13. And as previous weeks' leaks were responsible for revealing, the Pro models of the iPhone 14 feature a redesign of the notch, the most iconic element of the iPhone of the last five years.

But it is not just a tab reduction, but a reinvention under the Dynamic Island concept.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

Apple has officially announced the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Both handsets have a new pill-shaped cutout that replaces the notch and can be dynamically adjusted, in the first major redesign of the display since Apple introduced the iPhone X in 2017. Both devices also have a faster A16 Bionic chip and an always-on display.

The first notable change to the design of the iPhone 14 Pro models is the display. While Apple will offer the usual 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch options, the notch is being replaced with a pill-shaped cutout that will house Face ID components and a second circular cutout for the front-facing camera.

The new notch

Apple has moved the proximity sensor behind the display, and notifications will now pop out of the notch in an animation. Apple calls this system the Dynamic Island. Notifications and alerts will adapt and move around the pill-shaped notch, and Apple is really leaning into how it animates and uses the system for new notifications.

Apple showed a variety of ways that Dynamic Island will animate and work in action, including live activity widgets that come to life and animations and controls for music. Swiping home will move background tasks, such as music playback, to the island.

Both the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will include an always-on display that works with the new lock screen widget feature in iOS 16. It will support information such as reminders, calendar events and weather without the iPhone having to wake up to display it. There's even a sleep state for iOS 16 wallpapers that will darken them to consume less battery.

Inside the iPhone 14 Pro models is Apple's A16 Bionic chip. The company has focused on power efficiency, display and camera with its new chip. The six-core CPU includes two high-performance cores that use 20 percent less power and four efficiency cores that use one-third of competing chips.

The first iPhone with a 48-megapixel camera

This new A16 chip helps power the smooth animations found in the Dynamic Island feature, and will also boost Apple's new camera system. For the first time, the iPhone moves from having a 12-megapixel sensor to a 48-megapixel sensor. The new main camera improves low-light photography by up to two times, all via a four-pixel sensor with an aperture of f/1.78 and a focal length of 24 mm.

The sensor will take 12-megapixel photos for most photos to maximize light capture. This also allows Apple to crop the sensor in different ways to offer a real 2x zoom at a 48mm focal length. This should result in some impressive photos, and the new sensor even optimizes detail in Apple's ProRAW format.

The camera is ultra-wide, with improvements in macro photography and a 3x improvement in low light conditions. The iPhone 14's camera system flash has also been redesigned, so it is twice as bright and reacts to the focal length of photos.

If shooting video is what you're interested in, the iPhone 14 Pro models have you covered. The cinematic mode can now do 4K resolution at 30fps and 4K at 24fps.

The iPhone 14 Pro comes on the heels of modest upgrades to last year's iPhone 13 Pro models, which moved to a 120 Hz ProMotion high refresh rate display and three all-new cameras.
