Who is The Stranger in The Rings of Power?
Now that Season 1 has ended, we delve into the series' most mysterious figure, whose identity has given rise to numerous theories and speculation.
J. R. R. Tolkien's universe is gigantic and through the books, movies, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Prime Video's new series, has immersed us in numerous journeys filled with locations and characters. Interestingly, none had caught our attention as much as the figure of The Stranger. An enigma fallen from the sky -never better said-, whose identity has become a headache for viewers. Now that Season 1 is over, we have more on this character.
Who is The Stranger in The Rings of Power?
Warning: The following lines contain spoilers about the last episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
The key to shedding some light on this character's enigmatic figure is not that we know who he is. Instead, the most exciting thing so far is that we already know who he is not: Sauron. Throughout the first season, many theories from viewers -and from the series itself- pointed to the fact that The Stranger would end up revealing himself as the Dark Lord himself. Finally, it has not been like that, since learning Sauron's true identity has been one of the great attractions during the final stretch of the last episodes.
So, with that theory out of the way, what do we know about The Stranger? Season 1 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has ended and we've been left with the unknown hanging in the air, as his identity has not been officially revealed. However, once ruled out that he is Sauron, a very important revelation has not gone unnoticed: he is an Istari, something that we can translate as Wizard or Wise One. Without going any further, Sauron's own worshippers are forced to confront him, who shows off his magical powers and disintegrates them with his light magic...
This leads us to see how another of the most widespread theories becomes stronger than ever: Is Gandalf? Although the most popular and well-known among fans, we must remember that only five Wizards came to Middle-earth tasked with helping to fight Sauron. We will have to wait to find out, but, at the very least, we can take it as official that he is a very powerful wizard, that his nature is noble and that Sauron is his main enemy... We could think something like "plain and simple", although, of course, the series will offer us several more seasons and for now it is impossible to know how long the mystery will last in Season 2, which has already started filming.
