Cyberpunk Edgerunners: will there be a Season 2 for the anime?
CD Projekt RED reflects on the project and hints about the future of the Netflix anime.
Studio Trigger, creators of Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia, Promare and many more hit anime series, was the studio responsible with translating the world of Cyberpunk 2077 to the small screen. Netflix released all ten episodes at once, and was immediately well received by fans and critics alike. This is why many ask themselves if there will be a second season. While speaking to Famitsu, CD Projekt RED Japan’s representative Satoru Honma seems to have cooled down the idea.
“I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback,” he said. Sadly he was very clear in denying that a second season is already in production: “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background’.”
Honma restated the fact that even if they made more adaptations of the game in the future, he’s not certain “if it would be Season 2 or something completely different.”
A Cyberpunk 2077 expansion and sequel are on the way
It may have been that Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t get the successful launch everyone wished for, but CD Projekt RED has been fixing and toiling at it, betting on a continuous investment on the property. The developers have ditched the last-gen versions and confirmed a full fledged expansion, Phantom Liberty, for 2023 exclusively for PC, PS5 and Xbox. On the other hand, they’ve also revealed that a whole new game is on the table, known only as “Orion.”
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Google Stadia. Although, the Google Stadia version will close down alongside said service in 2023.
