God of War Ragnarok reveals 4 different graphic modes on PS5: up to 45 and 120 FPS

Kratos and Atreus’ return to nordic mythology is almost here, and it looks like its technical prowess is here to conquer.

Update:
God of War Ragnarok reveals 4 different graphic modes on PS5: up to 45 and 120 FPS

Kratos and Atreus journey will continue this November when God of War Ragnarok finally releases on PS5 and PS4. As fans might remember, the previous launch in the series back in 2018 surprises both audiences and critics with its gameplay, story and, of course, its impressive visuals. Now, it seems like the long awaited sequel is aiming for an even higher quality.

While the trailers and screenshots we’ve been able to see already show a gorgeous and updated look to the game world, its characters and a ton of fantastic creature designs, Santa Monica Studio has revealed the game will have four different graphic modes:

  • 4K resolution and 30 FPS
  • 1080p resolution and 60 FPS
  • 4K resolution and 40 FPS (HDMI 2.1 required)
  • 120 FPS (HDMI 2.1 required)

As you can see, the first two modes mentioned are the usual ones we tend to see nowadays on most current-gen titles. The former two however, make use of the upgrades found on HDMI 2.1 cables to offer entirely new configurations to play in on console.

Full screen

A frame rate experience like no other

Using the right cables will allow your PS5 to run in 4K resolution while reaching 40 FPS. This frame rate may sound odd, but we’ve actually seen it before: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was the first PS5 title to use this configuration in its “Fidelity” mode, and that resulted in a smooth, almost cinematic experience while playing the game that set it apart from its predecessors. While it might not be the optimal way to play multiplayer games, single player focused games with grand vistas and action packed sequences benefit from this with an added sense of speed and impact, especially when the game has been hardcoded for it.

The last additional mode however, 120fps, will grant you a buttery smooth experience that might definitely be the way some people want to experience the game. However, we don not yet know at what resolution the game would be rendered in. Do notice that to enjoy this mode, you’ll need a screen that both has HDMI 2.1 ports, as well as 120Hz capabilities. Both of which still come at a hefty price point.

God of War Ragnarok launches on November 9th, 2023. The game will be available exclusively on PS5 and PS4.
