God of War Ragnarök wasn’t restricted by PS4, according to Santa Monica Studio

God of War Ragnarök always had PlayStation 4 in mind. This was stated by animation director Bruno Velazquez in an interview with Eurogamer. The creative is convinced that they have succeeded in meeting their goals, and has stressed that the PS4 hardware has not restricted "in any way" what they had outlined for the project.

"From the very get-go, we knew that this was going to be a PS4 game, because we wanted to support the fanbase," said Velazquez. With all this in mind, the goal was to "make this the best PS4 game we can make" for the platform and "surpass God of War 2018 in every way possible”.

Better on PS5, but everything is on PS4

The animation director has stated that the idea was to expand the number of characters, have more variety of enemies, conclude the story, etc. "We were able to achieve on the PS4. Because of that, we didn't really feel that we were restricted in any way, because all the goals that we set out to do, we were able to achieve."

Hardware limitations have not been a problem, as he repeated: "PS5 basically just made the game that much better. So because that was our philosophy going into it, we never really felt restricted on the goals that we set out for ourselves" by PS4. Velazquez confirmed that obviously, the next-gen console version will be the ideal one to enjoy, but remarked that the game "that pushes the PS4 to the max".

On PS5, the new adventure of Kratos and Atreus improves framerate, graphics, and textures, as well as adding 3D audio and haptic feedback on the DualSense controller.

God of War Ragnarök will be released next November 9 on PS4 and PS5. Since this year, Sony does not offer free updates to improve intergenerational games, so if you buy the title on the previous generation console you will have to pay $10 to receive the PlayStation 5 version.
