Deadpool 3: Hugh Jackman reveals a surprising truth about his return as Wolverine

Hugh Jackman, the famous Australian actor that for decades played Wolverine in the Mutant side of Marvel movies through Fox, explained to Variety how is it that his surprising return to superhero films happened. This time, as part of the MCU in Deadpool 3 right next to his close friend Ryan Reynolds. And while we all assumed that it was Reynolds who pestered Jackman to bring him back, the truth is actually the opposite. This is how Jackman explains it, revealing that it was him who made the offer to Marvel.

Wolverine and Deadpool together in the MCU: achievement unlocked

The actor revealed that the journey to bring both characters together again, now inside the MCU, was long awaited by both of them. Apparently, the first Deadpool movie had a lot to do with the decision: “I went to a screening of ‘Deadpool.’ I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’” Jackman said. “All I kept seeing in my head was ‘48 Hrs.’ with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here.” As it turns out, he only saw the movie before shooting Logan, but after already stating to the world that he was retiring as Wolverine.

This is why it was such a shock to Ryan Reynolds when Jackman called him to propose his return as Wolverine, soon before the Deadpool star had a meeting with Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ big honcho. “I think, actually, he’d given up”, said Jackman. “I think it was a big shock to him. There was a massive pause, and then he said, ‘I can’t believe the timing of this’”.

Even so, Hugh Jackman keeps the Wolverine role close to his heart, which is why it hasn’t been a challenge for him to “snikt” his adamantium claws again after his official retirement in 2017. “A little part of me now thinks I’d be better at it,” admitted the actor. “Is that arrogance of age or something? Wolverine’s a tortured character — more tortured than me. But I always get the feeling of him being comfortable in his own skin. And I feel more comfortable in my own skin now, even though it’s messier.”

Deadpool 3 has a planned release date in theaters on November 8, 2024.
