God of War Ragnarök review scores: does Elden Ring have a rival for GoTY?

The God of War that greek mythology hid and Santa Monica Studio rose up to legendary status is back from retirement (again) and he’s got loose ends to tie up. For starters, the nordic story that the 2018 game began in an epic fashion must come to an end. Second, to show that Kratos is still in his prime.
God of War: Ragnarök is one of the few games that hasn’t been delayed to 2023, and with that it’s set to compete for the Game of the Year title against Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s masterpiece from earlier in the year. But is the game enough?
Well, most of the international gaming press agrees that we have a heavy hitter on the way. A game that surpasses its predecessor on most aspects, and that one already was Game of the Year from 2018. Even when the narrative has produced a few contrasts of opinion amongst the critics, gameplay wise we’re looking at a product that has fixed the failings of its previous game and has gone above and beyond them. This time, Kratos and Atreus have a more dynamic and free-flowing combat system, and the enemy and boss variety has increased by quite a lot. All in all, we’re talking about a title that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, because it needs it doesn’t need to.
