Nintendo and Valve have been supplanted by Twitter’s new verification system
Following Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, the multi millionaire tech giant allows people to buy their blue tick. Shenanigans ensue.
We have our first taste of chaos on Twitter after the verification system changes on the social network. Yesterday, November 9, 2022, for only a couple of hours some verified accounts got an extra verification tick if they had the “Official” word somewhere in their profile. This appeared under hundreds of government accounts, companies, news media, etc. This however, disappeared quickly, and from then on Twitter Blue subscribers were able to buy a verification tick. The result? Official accounts like Nintendo of America or Valve being substituted.
A message for Elon Musk
The fake Valve account announced a supposed new title from the company, Ricochet: Neon Prime. The person behind it used this time to denounce the dangers of this new system, given that many people will confuse the account for the real one and fuel an explosion of fake news.
“Twitter Blue is an issue. Misinformation is so easy to spread and the damage it can cause can have a real impact on people, much more of an impact than a fake game announcement,” said the user in a now deleted tweet, before the account was suspended. They continued their message by calling on Musk’s Twitter account to do better.
The fake Nintendo of America account did not follow in this user’s steps, and dedicated their time to posting photos of Mario flipping people off, just as you can see in Tom Warren’s tweet above.
It’s important to note that when you click on the blue ticks of an account inside their profile, it’s possible to see if the verification they have is because of any real importance or if it’s bought with Twitter Blue. In any case, this verification is not available in several countries, so even if someone buys a tick it might not appear next to their name. How can this be fixed? We’ll have to wait and see what Elon Musk does.
