Henry Cavill confirms he won’t come back as Superman

The actor had announced his return in October, but changes in Warner Bros. Discovery have modified DC’s plans.

Update:
Henry Cavill confirms he won’t come back as Superman

News about Henry Cavill picking up the Superman cape again was well received by fans of DC. But with changes in Warner Bros. Discovery culminating on JAmes Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios, the complicated task of building a new cinematic universe comes with bad news: not only was Wonder Woman 3 canceled outright, but Cavill will no longer be the Man of Steel. The actor confirmed as such on his Instagram account, revealing that the long rumored sequel wouldn’t happen.

Even so, Gunn has said that they’ve explored possible ways in which they’ll be able to work with Cavill.

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman”, wrote the actor in his message. Even after the studio told him to announce his return back in October. Cavill admits that “this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life”.

He addressed the fans directly, and reminded them that Superman continues to exist, even if he isn’t wearing the cape. “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.(-) My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

The next Superman movie will tackle the character’s youth

Further confirmation of Henry Cavill not putting on the red and blue suit comes from a message posted by James Gunn. According to the new head of the DC cinematic universe, the next movie is already in its initial stages, but they need a younger actor than Cavill because they’ll be focusing on the beginnings of the character as a superhero. Even so, they’re not closing any doors to working together in the future.

“Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future,” said Gunn. Recently, the writer/director had mentioned that the Man of Steel was to be a huge priority for their new universe.
