After unraveling several rumors on Twitter, Druckmann confirms that there are still stories to tell in The Last of Us.

The Last of Us Part 3 might happen, according to Neil Druckmann

With the franchise celebrating its 10th anniversary, it’s a pretty big year for The Last of Us. In a little bit less of a week, the HBO live action series is releasing its first episode on the network’s service, we have a remake launched barely a few months ago, and news about a new multiplayer game are being awaited by fans all over the world, with only a new piece of concept art having being released. However, even when the rumors were quelled just a few days ago, it seems Neil Druckmann is hinting at a third main entry for the franchise. Or at least he’s not against the idea.

“I think there’s more story to tell,” said the creative, making it clear that The Last of Us is still not over and perhaps revealing that they don’t plan to tell these new stories in the television series. We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games. We won’t run into the same issue as Game of Thrones since Part II doesn’t end on a cliffhanger.”

Great expectations for Joel and Ellie

A few days ago it was Druckmann himself who gave into the hype for the series starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. “It’ll be the best, most authentic game adaptation there is”, he said, reaffirming his intention to capture the attention of those who aren’t really fans of video games in general.

“People see bad adaptations and it adds credence to the idea that games are childish,” he says. “I love the idea that someone could watch this and be moved by it and then be like, ‘Wait, that’s based on the video game?’” And it seems like everyone involved is also certain that it’ll be successful if only because of the main characters and their stories, as well as the work of the actors behind them. The original voice and motion capture interpreters of Joel (Troy Baker) and Ellie (Ashley Johnson) have come out to speak wonders of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s work during the production, and that means a lot for fans of the original game.

The Last of Us is debuting on HBO on January 16, 2023.
