Naughty Dog reveals why they haven't announced their new PS5 game
The video games director argues that announcing the games too far in advance created problems within the studio.
Naughty Dog is known for being one of the most successful video game industry studios and for its many internal problems. Accused of crunching and malpractice, the PlayStation Studios developer is now focused on designing its titles in a more sustainable way. Neil Druckmann, creative director of The Last of Us Part 2, has pointed out in an interview with ComicBook one of the mistakes that the creators of Uncharted have made: announcing games too early.
According to Druckmann, revealing the projects ahead of time generated internal turmoil, so they have changed their strategy in this regard. That is the main reason why they have not yet unveiled their secret title.
"You're right, we did announce Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Part 2 way in advance, but that actually caused a little bit of the work-life balance issues that we've sometimes had at the studio,” explained the creative. "By delaying that announcement a bit, we could play with the schedule more and we're more conscious now about how we're approaching production."
A new project underway
Neil Druckmann also anticipates the existence of a secret project, of which they are not going to reveal anything yet. "There's our [The Last of Us] multiplayer project and there's another project that I will not say anything about that's beyond that that we're also very much excited for.."
Uncharted 4: The Thief's End was announced in 2013, although it was not released until 2016. During that period, development was rebooted and Amy Hennig, creative director of the original trilogy, left Naughty Dog. In the case of The Last of Us Part 2, the studio revealed its existence in 2016, but it took four years for it to finally see the light of day.
HBO Max will premiere next January 15 the series of The Last of Us, based on the first video game of the saga and starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the roles of Joel and Ellie, respectively.
