The Last of Us 3 could happen if the team has a compelling story “about love”
Naughty Dog is contemplating a third part for The Last of Us, but it would take “a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love,” according to Neil Druckmann
With the release of The Last of Us on HBO Max, the franchise is at its highest popularity ever thanks to this new wave of fans swarming in after discovering the amazing adaptation. But, what about a hypothetical third entry in the format that saw its origins, video games?
While many are waiting for news about the multiplayer project based on the same post apocalyptic universe, fans of the series would eat up a third main game that closes off the story arcs that were more or less left open in the second title. The developers in Naughty Dog are aware of this, but they would need a convincing excuse to make The Last of Us 3, or so said Neil Druckmann during a recent interview with BuzzFeed.
The Last of Us and the expansion of its universe
Recently, it was Druckmann himself who revealed they already had a story draft for a possible third part of the franchise. Now the director has openly talked about a real possibility of seeing a third part one day. “With The Last of Us, it's up to us whether we want to continue it or not,” he admitted.
“Our process is the same thing we did when we did Part 2, which is if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love — just like the first and second game did — then we will tell that story. If we can't come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end."
It’s clear enough that they have more of that story to tell, so as long as they can create an adequate story, The Last of Us 3 will become a reality. On the other hand, Druckmann reminds fans that the online game of the franchise is coming along nicely, after working on it for several years. “you'll be able to enter the world of The Last of Us with your friend and get to experience the tension and the brutality of that world — and a brand new story and cast of characters that live in another city that we haven't seen yet in the world of The Last of Us. This is going to be another chapter in the universe of The Last of Us.”
