The Flash reveals its first official trailer: Michael Keaton returns as Batman

With the Super Bowl as its backdrop, DC reveals the first look at the highly anticipated installment of The Flash, with the entire multiverse in crisis.

Update:
The Flash reveals its first official trailer: Michael Keaton returns as Batman

After a long wait, the Super Bowl was the stage on which DC and Warner Bros. unveiled the first glimpse of The Flash, the standalone movie starring Ezra Miller's Fastest Man Alive. Check out the trailer below:

The Flash: First details

“Worlds collide in ‘The Flash’ when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past,” read the official synopsis. “But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned.”

As we can see in the trailer, we not only have two Barry Allens, but two Batmans, one played by Ben Affleck and with the dramatic return of Michael Keaton as Batman. The cast is also joined by the return of Michael Shannon as General Zod and the appearance of Sasha Calle as Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl.

Flashpoint as the basis for the movie

For some years, it has been known that the film's plot would be inspired by Geoff Johns' 2011 Flashpoint, where Barry Allen changes the timeline to rescue his mother. Still, he ends up messing the DC reality, in a world where Aquaman and Wonder Woman lead their people to war, and Thomas Wayne is a violent Batman.

While some of these elements won't be part of the movie, this isn't the first time fans have seen a Flashpoint-inspired story in other media. The CW's The Flash Season 3 was inspired by it, and even it was adapted to animation in Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox.

We will now have to wait and see how elements of this movie will help the reboot of the DC Extended Universe under the new vision of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The Flash is directed by Andy Muschietti and is set to be released in theaters on June 16, 2023.
