Overwatch 2 celebrates Valentine’s Day with its very own dating sim: Loverwatch
Blizzard is celebrating the most romantic day of the year with the release of their very own “totally real” and “totally not canon” Overwatch dating sim
If you didn’t have plans for Valentine’s Day, you do now: Blizzard has just released Loverwatch, an entirely real dating simulator game that you can play right now that brings you the opportunity of getting real personal with a few of Overwatch 2’s characters.
Playable through any browser and completely free, this small visual novel game is available from today and until February 28, 2023 through its official site. With the full title of “Loverwatch -Love Never Dies-” (a play on Mercy’s “Heroes never die” catchphrase), you’ll be guided through the experience by Cupid Hanzo as you try to woo the hearts of either resident cyborg ninja Genji, or the angelic healer Mercy. These are the only two characters available to date in the game right now, but the dialogue in the game hints at the fact that more options could be added later on during the game’s existence.
The entire experience is surprisingly self aware, not only breaking the 4th wall about the ridiculousness of the concept, but also making references to the game’s lore and even its community. There’s even jokes about some of Overwatch’s most famous memes like Genji’s constant requests of “I need healing”, or a lamentation of how this is the only new Zenyatta content fans have received. It’s all a very fun experience that fans of the series shouldn’t miss out on, especially since it hints at Blizzard considering making a more complete version of the game in the future.
Shot through the heart
If you’re not quite that excited about a romantic spin-off, and were actually hoping for something a bit more robust for Overwatch 2, don’t worry: the Valentine’s Day event in the game is now active. There’s a wave of new content that includes the Hanzo Cupid Skin from Loverwatch available for sale in the store, as well as stickers, emotes, and more.
In the gameplay side of things, there’s a special event in Arcade called Love of Geometry that pits two teams of four against each other in a Team Deathmatch. Except everyone plays as Hanzo wearing the Cupid Skin, and the amazing Scatter Arrows ability that the character had when Overwatch first released is coming back.
As an added bonus, those who decide to play Loverwatch can get a few rewards just for doing so, including a special Play of the Game intro, and some cute player titles.
