Nintendo Switch Online points towards a new device, but there’s no confirmation of a Switch 2

In a surprising twist, the Activision Blizzard acquisition by Microsoft has produced documents that reveal Nintendo will have its online service on a different device apart from Switch.

Nintendo Switch Online points towards a new device, but there’s no confirmation of a Switch 2

To this day,Nintendo Switch Online is a service linked exclusively to Nintendo’s hybrid console, the Switch, just as its name suggests. However, the console cycle is approaching the end of its life. There has been a lot of talk about Pro models or about a successor, but at the moment Nintendo has not revealed any plans to move on. Meanwhile, a document from the UK’s Competition and Market Authority(CMA) has revealed that the service (or at least part of it) will be available on another device.

The report, which belongs to the investigation being made into the purchase of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, says the following: "Nintendo's cloud gaming service is only available on the Nintendo Switch device and [REDACTED]”. As one might expect, the document doesn't specify Nintendo's plans, so we'll have to wait and see what the future holds. The phrase is somewhat ambiguous, since it can refer to the fact that the functionality of the cloud can be transferred to another platform, such as the PC or mobile phones.

What is the future of Nintendo Switch?

Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo, referred to the future of Switch during a meeting with the company’s shareholders. According to the CEO, the company is entering "uncharted territory" within its console business. He has recognized that it will be difficult to sell hardware at the same rate as before, so they’re considering that the real challenge will be "convincing consumers who are considering new purchases, replacement purchases, or additional purchases to pick up the Nintendo Switch.”

Regarding a possible price drop, the head of Nintendo has ruled out that this option is a possibility at this time: “We have done our best to maintain both its value and price of hardware and software in our long term business strategy. We do not believe that any changes to this policy are necessary at this stage.”
