Shigeru Miyamoto: “We’re always working on Mario”
Shigeru Miyamoto reflected upon the future of Nintendo, revealing that the spirit of the company has already been handed off to the next generation.
On the occasion of the opening of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood, Shigeru Miyamoto has granted an interview toIGN, where he has not only talked about the future of Nintendo, but has also revealed that they are always working on new titles in the Mario saga, although to this day they still cannot reveal anything about these projects.
“We're always working on Mario, so when we get to a time where we can share information, we'll certainly do so," he explained. Regarding the future of the company, the Japanese creative has reflected on the corporate identity and the passing of that essence to the following generations.
“As the company has gained new competitors over the years, it’s given us an opportunity to think deeply about what makes Nintendo Nintendo. [President] Shuntaro Furukawa is currently in his 40s, and [general manager] Shinya Takahashi is in his 50s.” According to Miyamoto, they are prepared to ensure that "the spirit of Nintendo is passed down successfully” towards the following generations.
A very clear philosophy
“I am not concerned about that anymore. Now I’m focusing on the need to continue to find new experiences. This has always been what interested and excited me about the medium: not perfecting the old but discovering the new.”
In the same interview, Shigeru Miyamoto has highlighted the value of their characters, who do not have to be confined exclusively to video games. “This is something I’d been discussing for over 10 years with Mr. [Satoru Iwata],” the late former Nintendo president. “Nintendo has a lot of characters”, which are the company’s “biggest strength” and how they are used "in different types of media beyond just games."
Mario's father has explained that they want to take advantage of all those charactersand not just limit themselves to games, but find the best media for them. "If there is a business opportunity, we’d certainly love to explore it. But Nintendo’s a company with many different talents involved."
Super Mario Bros. The Movie, by Illumination and Nintendo, is the next big project from the Kyoto company, which will be released in theaters on April 6, 2023
