Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil and The Evil Within, is leaving Tango Gameworks
In an email sent to Bethesda employees, the vice president of the company revealed that Shinji Mikami is stepping down as head of Tango Gameworks.
Here’s something no one was expecting: Shinji Mikami, founder of Tango Gameworks and father of Resident Evil, has made the decision to leave the company..ZeniMax has sent an email to its employees to report this situation, which TrueAchievements was able to read and that has been verified as authentic. Todd Vaughn, senior vice president of Bethesda, has been in charge of breaking the news.
The email read: “I am writing today to let you know that studio head Shinji Mikami has decided to leave Tango Gameworks in the coming months. Mikami-san has been a creative leader and supportive mentor to young developers at Tango for 12 years through his work on the Evil Within franchise, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and of course, Hi-Fi Rush."
In fact, Vaughn assures in that same email that Hi-Wi Rush has been “one of the most successful launches for Bethesda and Xbox in recent years”. As he explains, the game has generated a positive response “for the business and Tango”.
All of this has already been confirmed by Bethesda on social media, with their official account posting the following message:
Shinji Mikami, a very long and successful career
The creative has among his successes the creation of Resident Evil, a franchise in which he worked until its fourth installment. During his time at Capcom he was also present in the development of games such as Dino Crisis and Viewtiful Joe. After his departure, he directed Vanquish, a riotous action game developed by Platinum Games.
Shinji Mikami founded Tango Gameworks in 2010, but the studio was acquired that same year by Bethesda's owner ZeniMax. Twelve years later, the studio became part of Xbox Game Studios. In 2014 they released The Evil Within, a horror game that received a sequel in 2017. Although the third installment is still not a reality, the developer has wasted no time: Ghostwire: Tokyo came out in 2022 and released Hi-Fi Rush by surprise just a few weeks ago.
What will be next? The email does not reveal what Mikami's next steps will be.
