Fortnite on PC will no longer be compatible with Windows 7 and 8
Epic Games announces that Fortnite is dropping support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems with the start of Chapter 4 Season 2 of the game.
The arrival of Fortnite’s new season brings bitter news for those with modest and/or older PCs: the game will no longer be compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8 after the start of Chapter 4 Season 2. Here is what Epic Games has announced and what alternatives are available to continue playing the game:
Fortnite will no longer be supported on Windows 7 and Windows 8 with Chapter 4 Season 2
Epic Games has announced via the Fortnite Status Twitter account that the game will no longer be compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8 with the arrival of Chapter 4 Season 2 on Friday, March 10, 2023. In other words, if our computer is running Windows 7 or Windows 8 as an operating system, we will not be able to download and install Fortnite.
In a tweet following the reminder of this change, Epic Games suggests as a solution for players who cannot upgrade their operating system to Windows 10 or Windows 11 to use NVIDIA GeForce NOW, NVIDIA's cloud gaming service, to continue playing Fortnite. Another option not suggested by the company, but equally valid, would be XCloud, Xbox Cloud Gaming's cloud gaming service, which is also compatible with browsers on PC.
To summarize, as of Friday, March 10, 2023, if you regularly play Fortnite on a PC and your operating system is not Windows 10 or Windows 11, you will no longer be able to play. You will need to upgrade your OS from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10/11 or play Fortnite via GeForce NOW or XCloud. A cold water pitcher for many, no doubt, but times move on and it is what it is.
