Keanu Reeves and John Wick 4 director want to let franchise rest
Chad Stahelski believes that after nearly ten years, it is time for the two to take a break.
After almost a decade of playing one of the greatest action heroes of recent times, it seems that Keanu Reeves' time has come to stop. That's according to the movie's director, Chad Stahelski, who thinks it's time for the character to take a break after John Wick 4.
"In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give John Wick a rest," Stahelski said. "I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute."
"Wicks always, for some weird reason, always get the latest release date in Japan," the director continues. "It’s always like, three months later. If it’s the same this time, we’ll do a Japanese tour and release the movie in September. Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we’ll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, ‘What do you think?¡ We’ll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie.”
A universe with a lot to tell
And the fact is that the two have been working together for almost 10 years in no less than four movies of the character. It all started with the death of his dog in John Wick (2014), continued with John Wick: Blood Pact (2017) and John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019), until arriving at John Wick: Chapter 4, which opens next Friday the 24th.
However, this does not mean that the John Wick universe is coming to an end, as there are up to two different spin-offs planned for different media. For one, Ballerina will be released in a few months, starring Ana de Armas and Norman Reedus, and focusing on a character already introduced in the movies. Meanwhile, The Continental is a series based on the iconic hotel that will debut on Prime Video later this year.
