Which are the best horses in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? Traits and how to get them
Horses are back in Tears of the Kingdom. Here we show you which are the best breeds and what are their advantages in your next adventure.
In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, horses serve a purpose beyond mere transportation. They serve as loyal companions that enhance your experience and immersion in the vast Kingdom of Hyrule. And while Tears of the Kingdom features a variety of machines, the feeling of traversing Hyrule on horseback is still an important part of the experience. With different abilities and traits, each breed has qualities that affect gameplay and require strategic consideration. As part of our guide to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, we take a look at all the breeds in the game and what makes each one different.
Giant White Stallion
The Giant White Stallion is a unique horse in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It is known for its incredible stamina, allowing players to travel long distances without tiring. This makes it a valuable asset when exploring the vast landscapes of Hyrule. This horse is also quite strong, making it a formidable option for combat. It also plays a key role in two side quests, adding depth to the game’s narrative. However, it is not very fast and cannot pull a wagon.
How To Get the Giant White Stallion
To acquire this magnificent creature, you must travel to the Lake of the Horse God, located in the Faron Grasslands southeast of the Highland Stables. To reach your destination, you must cross the Horse God Bridge and speak with Jini and Straia, two enthusiastic individuals who yearn for a glimpse of the legendary stallion.
As you continue along the path behind them, the colossal horse will eventually come into view. Using stealth, cautiously approach the majestic creature and mount it, using stamina-replenishing items to calm its spirit. Once successfully tamed, proudly present your prized acquisition to Jini and Straia, then register it at the Highland Stable.
Epona
Epona, the iconic horse from the classic The Legend of Zelda series, returns in Tears of the Kingdom. She is a powerful and versatile mount that can be valuable to players. Epona has exceptional stats; she is fast, strong, and has good stamina, making her well suited for a variety of tasks. However, it cannot pull wagons and has no customization options.
How To Get Epona
If you choose Epona as your horse of choice, you can access the Tears of the Kingdom’s top horse by using either the Super Smash Bros. Link or Twilight Princess Link Amiibo. After completing the Sky Island tutorial and arriving in Hyrule, scanning the Amiibo will summon Epona into the game. Alternatively, if you have a save file from Breath of the Wild, you can find Epona in the New Serenne Stable. Talk to the stable owner and Epona should be available for you to mount and ride.
Golden Horse
The Golden Horse in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a magnificent sight with its golden coat. This horse is also a powerhouse of endurance and speed, making it an invaluable companion for covering long distances quickly or racing against the clock. It can be difficult to find, but the rewards are well worth it.
How To Get the Golden Horse
To acquire the Golden Horse, your journey begins at the Lucky Clover Gazette, located east of Rito Village in the Hebra Region. There you will meet Traysi, who will entrust you with a quest to find Zelda’s prized Golden Horse.
When the quest begins, make your way to the Snowfield Stables in the South Tabantha Snowfield. From there, head into the North Tabantha Snowfield and navigate past the Frost Gleeok. Amidst the herd, you will discover the hidden Golden Horse. Subdue its untamed nature and mount it, then return to the Snowfield Stable.
Upon arrival, speak with Harlow, the hardworking stablehand, who will facilitate the registration process for your newfound equine companion. As a token of his appreciation, Harlow will reward you with the coveted Royal Bridle and Saddle, further cementing your bond with the Golden Horse.
Skeletal Horse
The Skeletal Horse is an undead steed with the most unique aspect of any horse in the game. The Stalhorse’s best use is its ability to run over gloom, making it an ideal choice for traversing the Underground Depths. Above ground, their presence can confuse monsters and provide a strategic advantage. While they offer a unique riding experience, they come with their own set of limitations, as they cannot be registered at stables, and their form is only preserved in darkness.
How To Get the Skeletal Horse
If you have a taste for the eerie, the Skeletal Horse could be regarded as the finest steed in Tears of the Kingdom. To locate a Stalhorse, venture into the Underground Depths, specifically in Central Hyrule, situated south of Lookout Landing. Descend to the depths of an open chasm encircled by red, luminescent rocks. In the northwest vicinity of this location, you will encounter Stalhorses. Despite their skeletal visage, you can tame them by offering apples and carrots as sustenance.
Wild Horse
These majestic creatures roam freely across Hyrule’s landscapes, offering a sense of freedom as their stats are randomized. Taming them is a challenge that requires patience and skill, but the bond between Link and his horse is all the more rewarding. Each horse is unique, with its own strengths and weaknesses. Some horses are faster than others, while others are stronger or have different abilities.
How To Get the Wild Horse
To tame a wild horse, look for these creatures in the vast fields of Hyrule, often near stables or in the southern area of Lookout Landing. Use caution and approach the horse carefully to minimize any potential disturbance. When prompted, press the A Button to begin the taming process. Repeatedly press the left bumper to calm and reassure the horse until it recognizes you as its rider.
